Supporting our Armed Forces community

Armed Forces Covenant

If you are serving, or have served in HM Armed Forces, the Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation to make sure you and your family, as part of the Armed Forces community, are treated fairly when you access services, and do not face discrimination compared to other citizens. Special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most, such as the injured and the bereaved.

We are an Armed Forces friendly employer and have been granted the Gold award as part of the Employer Recognition Scheme for the Armed Forces Covenant. This is a scheme that offers awards to organisations who pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the Armed Forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

Welcoming your skills

Come and join us

Although most service leavers and their families make a positive transition into civilian life there are several challenges that you may face, particularly in relation to employment. The level of preparedness may depend on the reasons for your discharge and on your family circumstances. As a Council, we are committed to recognising our obligations through the Armed Forces Covenant and actively welcome and encourage members of the Armed Forces community, including Service Leavers, Veterans, Reservists and their families to apply for employment opportunities.

Job Search

Helping you navigate the recruitment process

We recognise that members of the Armed Forces Community can bring many important skills to an organisation. These include:

  • Strong leadership and technical skills such as engineering, logistics, digital, technological, problem solving and project management.
  • Positive values and attitudes such as loyalty, focus, ability to take responsibility, strong work ethic, resilience and a commitment to ongoing learning and development.
  • Transferable knowledge and skills in areas like finance, administration and HR.

However, we also recognise that you may sometimes struggle to translate your skill set into a recognisable CV and to negotiate the recruitment process.

Making the transition and finding work can also be challenging for your families. Service deployment and relocation may have made it difficult for partners to find employment and build effective support networks. However, many of the skills learned in managing home and military life will also be transferable skills. These include problem solving, communication and teamwork, as well as resilience and adaptability.
